To help high school girls offset the cost of their gowns, an Ocean City High School senior collected donations and organized a free prom dress giveaway. Regardless of where they live or attend school, girls can book minute appointments to try on gowns at the Sea Isle City Italian American Club on Tuesday, April 20 or Wednesday, April The appointments will be staggered from 4 to 7 p. Carey had initially planned to host the giveaway at Ocean City High School, but the event quickly evolved when local stores and some as far as New York City began donating dresses, clothing racks and hangers in bulk. When proms were canceled last year amid the coronavirus pandemic, nearly gowns stayed in storage at Careys home. Many community members and students were excited when they learned the event could resume this year, Carey said. Colleen Buch, the clubs president, volunteered the club for the giveaway. Other people have reached out to donate gowns or help coordinate the event next week. The organizers decided to open up this years event to girls across Cape May and Atlantic counties, and beyond. A few students from a Pennsylvania suburb have already signed up for the event, Carey said. All of the dresses many still with price tags attached are free, with a limit of one per girl. Carey hopes to make the event fun for girls as they style themselves. She has set up a backdrop where they can pose for photos. Carey shared that her fellow classmates seem thrilled to be prepping for prom especially after their junior prom was canceled in The senior prom will take place on the football field in Carey Stadium. If prom happens, it happens, Carey said. To make an appointment to try on prom dresses, students can email Ocean City high school nurse and Wellness Center director Jill Berenato at jberenato ocsdnj. If you have a prom dress that you no longer need, dont let it hang in the back of your closet and gather dust for another day. Instead, donate it! There are a number of nonprofit organizations that specialize in collecting donated prom dresses and distributing them at no charge to needy high school students. With chapters nationwide, Operation Prom is a registered not-for-profit organization with a home base in Bronxville, New York. It has helped thousands of teenagers around the United States attend their proms in style. Starting in the fall each year, Operation Prom provides a list of places across the country where you can take your prom dresses for donation. To prepare for when you can next donate, you can have your gently-used dress dry cleaned. Since plus sizes are more limited in their availability , they are especially needed. All sizes, from 0 to 24, are accepted. Operation Prom gets dresses into the hands of students who need them by hosting dress give away events in the early fall for homecoming dances and the early spring for proms. For updates on the events visit their website. Teen girls are typically referred to Operation Prom by a social worker, guidance counselor, or school representative. Since they must be passing classes and demonstrate a financial need, you can rest assured that the donated dresses are fairly distributed. The organization also works on other projects to benefit teens. Beccas Closet was founded in memory of Rebecca Kirtman. Rebecca was a caring young woman who tragically passed away in a car accident only a few months after single-handedly organizing a prom dress drive for girls in her community. Beccas Closet aims to continue her vision and generous spirit as it matches gently-used, formal dresses with girls who otherwise may miss out on special occasions like the prom. In addition to prom dresses, this unique organization also accepts formal shoes and accessories. Contact your local chapter for specific needs in your community. Basically, you need to be sure the prom dress is free from damage. It should be in current styles.
