Construction has started on five new buildings that will house classrooms, administrative offices and space for multipurpose rooms. On Monday, crews were hard at work putting up the walls of what will eventually be the new buildings. However, the construction meant that the school had to remove nearly all of its playground equipment. Green T. Lindon was the winner of the Lafayette Parish Terrain Giveaway video contest, in which schools submitted videos explaining why they would like to earn one of the scholarships. As the winning school, Green T. Lindon and why it was so important to be a part of this Green T. Lindon family. In the video, one student from each grade held up signs describing what they will learn that year, including math skills, reading, comprehension, or social skills like respecting others, sharing, working in groups and more. They just broke out into shouts of joy. Victorian said the school was only able to salvage a couple of pieces of playground equipment, and is looking forward to the new additions. The equipment will likely be placed directly behind the school once the construction is finished. Victorian said the school is also in the process of trying to purchase about 2. Starting a school has been a dream of mine for quite a while. As a middle school teacher, I spent fifteen years tinkering in my classroom. I wanted to find a way to do a better job of reaching the variety of needs, interests, and ambitions of my students. I watched students grow and change from 6th grade to 8th grade, leaving elementary school and going into high school. The journey that we are on is to design a middle school that is small and nimble enough to adapt to each student. Because school is often too big, adults make choices aimed at efficiency. When students join our community, they are paired with a mentor who takes the lead in creating and maintaining a learner profile for that student. This learner profile is a constantly evolving record of the strengths, needs, motivations, goals and passions of each student as an individual. Using this ILP, the schedule and learning experience is customized for each student. Each week, mentors set and monitor short and long-term goals with students. With two teachers in every classroom, customized schedules, built in intervention periods and a robust special education program, students can achieve the goals they set for themselves. We held our classes and mentor meetings on Zoom, which took much more effort to make connections and build community. Our staff, however, is top-notch. They took lemons and made cold-pressed lemonade. Watching our school leaders problem-solve technology issues, coach teachers on how to increase student engagement in virtual learning, and make decisions around reopening was nothing short of watching miracles.
